Featuring the stories of our youth fellowship members & what mental health means to them
Having a brother with Autism Spectrum Disorder, my interest in mental health was sparked since young. It was confusing to me as a child why he acted uniquely from others. Such a curiosity extended to a passion to understand the intricacies of mental health.
I was driven to become a part of the mindline youth fellowship with the aim of making a meaningful and impactful contribution to the mental health landscape. My personal journey of being diagnosed with depression and anxiety has fueled my determination to create a more understanding and supportive environment for individuals facing mental health struggles/challenges. Through the fellowship, I hope to amplify awareness, share resources, and foster a sense of community that empowers everyone to prioritise and take charge of their own mental well-being.
People say “you never know what you have, until you’ve lost it.” With mental health, too, you never know how important it is, until the grounds start to shake.
My beginning for mental health advocacy started at my school peer supporter group. Till then I never knew the impact I could have on others. I met a person who has been struggling with moving on from a break-up. My event that I organized for the CCA turned into her biggest support group and she told me she finally found something to look forward to. She told me that me and the others from the group that it made her week much better and encouraged her to keep going. This opened my eyes to how much I can help someone in need and I wanted to do more. I wanted to raise awareness so that more people can come out of darkness like my friend and more people step forward to help their friends in need. The mindline youth fellowship is the perfect opportunity to do so <3
My day job deals with digital health and wellbeing, so these are areas that I have grown to enjoy over the span of the past 2+ years. One day at lunch, I came across the national digital mental health fellowship program. Interested, I checked out a bit more and noticed that I'm just nice at the upper limit of the age range. I thought, my whole life I have been timid and cautious and that led to nothing. I don't want to lead my life this way anymore. What if I gave this program a try?
I joined Mindline for personal growth because I hope to become more sensitive to the diverse needs of people. Being an educator, I am empowered to impact the lives of young people through my work. I can use the knowledge and experiences from mindline to value-add to youths' understanding of mental health, sensitise them to the needs of others and inspire them to become more empathetic individuals. There are stereotypes and stigmatisation about mental health today. I also too may have my own biases. I wish to debunk them, broaden my perspectives and be more accepting to people who may be different from me.
[Trigger warning: mention of self-harm and suicide]
Having been a victim of bullying, I know how it feels to struggle alone in the darkness. After all, I myself struggled with depression, anxiety, and eventually, PTSD for years. Unfortunately, I had no one to turn to for support; I was even forced to leave secondary school and got denied my right to complete my education.
Hi everyone! Tricia here :) I’m a med student and the founder of the mindline youth fellowship. Writing this is pretty surreal because just 2 years ago, this fellowship was a scrawl in my journal.
I joined the mindline youth fellowship programme as I yearned to be a voice for mental health. Just as how mental health is very personal to me, I’m sure that many others carry similar stories in their hearts. Being in the creative field, I want to learn how I can combine creative art expression and mental health. Through the program, I hope to be able to grow alongside like-minded peers and be part of the impact circle in advocating for mental health!
